GERMAN HORROR, BUMFIGHTS and DAS EXPERIMENT
GERMAN HORROR
I like giving little lessons on the state of the horror genre. Here is another class on the state of the underground.
In the subgenre of splatter and gore...three German directors come to mind.
Buttgereit, Ittenbach and Schnaas.
Jorg Buttgereit has directed the infamous Nekromantik. It's an artsy fartsy film about necrophilia, death and human sacrifice and love. Plot revolves around Rob, a freeway cleaner who takes home corpses which he and his girlfriend decide to use in various ways. The ending is shocking. German officials tried to cease the film...but Buttgereit, the ultimate indie director kept showing it throughout Germany. Eventually, it went underground in overseas bootlegs and traded for video nasties. Buttgereit reinvented the German horror film...and put the country on the map.
He eventually followed Nekromantik with Nekromantik 2. Der Todesking (The Death King) and Schramm followed.
Olaf Ittenbach is one of the new wave of horror directos from Germany. His movies The Burning Moon Premutos are both top of the line splatter fests. Check out the plots via IMDB. The gore in these movies rivals Peter Jackson's BrainDead AKA Dead-Alive. Premutos boasts a higher body count and gore factor. Great stuff.
Finally Andreas Schnaas is a true Cinderella story of filmmaking. His Violent Shit trilogy (Violent Shit, Violent Shit 2: Mother Hold My Hand, Violent Shit 3: Infantry of Doom AKA Zombie Doom) are shot on video gory splatter trash flicks. As amateurish as a gonzo porn video, it has a slasher Karl the Butcher (and his son in the later films, Karl Jr.) slashing, dismembering, crushing, stabbing, mutilating all victims who happen to be in the sparsly German forests. Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence is an early work of splatter. It's shot on video...you really can't expect much. Your standard balloons filled with red dye or paint. Sheep intenstines as human insides...you get the picture.
Oddly enough these 3 according to IMDB are making a flick together called Barcelona Babylon. These 3 deranged yet brilliant filmmakers making a flick? SICK!
BUMFIGHTS
If you've never gone to bumfights.com..where have you been??? bums and homeless folk (included drug addicts and crack whores) are paid to fight. In an ironic twist...the promoters were arrested. It's truly a fucked up thing to do. But its funny as hell.
DAS EXPERIMENT
Das Experiment a new film from Germany is about a experiment involving a test where 20 men take on the roles of prisoners and prison guards. Well all havoc breaks loose...and well you basically know what will probably happen. Good stuff.
I've just moved into a new apartment. More on that later.
